The Colonial style of architecture

Colonial architecture stems from the first settlers and is a reflection of the styles with which they were familiar but adapted to the North American climate and especially the availability of materials with which to build their homes. The large, central chimney is as functional as it is a distinctive feature of this style of home as is the two storey layout. Colonial style evolved per geographic region and was greatly influenced by the skill of the local tradesmen and dictated by the availability of local materials. A simple gable roof and the typically white clapboard siding (which can be of another color) make it recognizable. Although similar, Cape Cod style has more minimalist detailing and lacks of the overhang that gives New England Colonial style its unique flavor. Glass was a luxury and had to be shipped from overseas which is why the windows in North Eastern homes are small. Scale of the windows (usually double hung with shutters) and pattern (symmetrically placed on either side of a perfectly centered, gabled entrance portico sporting classically inspired columns and trim on a traditionally brick stoop) are identifying features in the New England Colonial style of architecture.

Although New England Colonial had strong British and French influences, the colonial architecture of other parts of the United States varies greatly depending on the origins of the settlers as South or Southwestern colonial style was strongly influenced by Spanish architecture and that of the deep south tends away from the massive fortress against winter and towards a style that embraces tall windows to let cooling breezes in from under wraparound verandas and wide overhangs to shade the inside from the hot sun but is somewhat reminiscent of Spanish colonial with gable roofs and wide porches that extend from primary roofs.
